A redesign of the main menu for Rebirth of the Night - a 1.12.2 Minecraft modpack
Rebirth of the Night is a development project I participated in for a period of time, as it's a passion of mine to contribute to the modded Minecraft community. During my time on the team, I sought to give the game's main menu a major facelift. UI design is something that has always intrigued me, and I love creating buttons, backgrounds, interactions and a positive user experience. Digital design isn't just graphics and media, after all. It's how a person interacts with the digital world.
I reached out to the team to propose my ideas, and they let me run wild with it while providing meaningful feedback. They lvoed the end result, and the main menu is a mainstay to this day.
Meet Splashy, the chatty rat!
I began by drawing up prototypes for the menu, presenting them to the team. After some initial feedback, I started exploring assets and ideas against existing similar projects, keeping in mind the game's primary theme and aesthetic.
The main menu makes use of a unique scripting program called "Fancy Menu" which utilizes JSON. I learned this new program and language to fully obtain a capability to deliver an amazing menu. I made use of software such as Blockbench, Aseprite and Blender to create and render an animated voxel-art scene containing items and blocks featured in the modpack, which serves as the main menu's background.
Furthermore, I created a set of UI elements to visually support the new UI design. Creating new sub menus, external links to the game's Discord, Wiki and Website, and packing the menu with common options, the menu ended up serving the game's needs perfectly. The team and the players are incredibly happy with the result!
