A pixel art bullet-hell game with pastel aesthetics
I grew up with video games from the late 80s and 90s. Today, game developers using pixel art is an aesthetic choice, as opposed to games of old, where it was a necessity due to hardware limitations.
When a project popped up at the University of Florida's digital art club that involved game design and pixel art, I knew I wanted to participate.
The team was given a month to plan and develop a simple game called HiJinx, a pastel pixel art bullet-hell game using Unity.
Swamps, caves and forests. There were a handful of environments to explore with my creativity.
My involvement in this project was to develop a couple of pixel art tilesets for the Swamp and Forest environments. A caves environment was also planned, but rendered incomplete due to project limitations.
I looked at various similar video game environments for inspiration and mood boards for their color palettes, aesthetics, and approach. This included other pixel art games, and even Minecraft!
The result was a complete tileset for both environments, featuring land, water, trees, rocks and more.
